Summary of the Meeting

Contrary to the prediction that the world population will swell to 9.7 billion by 2050, here in Japan, the population will plummet to 95 million, the “super low birthrate” and “super aging” will accelerate, and we will face serious challenges of a “shrinking work force” and “labor shortage”. And it has already begun. Under these circumstances, the main theme of this year's conference is “SDGs and Beyond,” and we would like to unravel what the next steps are beyond the SDGs and what Japan's future society should be like.

The SDGs are based on the basic concept of a virtuous cycle of “environment” and “economy,” with “the Earth” playing the leading role. What is the next step toward a virtuous circle of “what” and “economy”? The subject should be “people” and “local communities”, not “the earth”, and we believe that a paradigm shift from “negative legacy” to “positive legacy” is what will strengthen Japan's true competitiveness and take it a step forward.
