Summary of the Meeting

CGF Global Summit Kyoto 2023, held from June 6 to 8, 2023, opened with a keynote speech by Prime Minister Kishida, followed by speakers from various fields, based on the theme of Human and Planet Well-being set forth by the Japan Task Force. The event ended with a message from Mr. Ken Watanabe.

The Japan Day 2023 will be held in the following two parts.
The first part will include a message from the CGF Co-Chairs, a policy statement from the MD, and reports on global policies and key activities as well as local activities in Japan to further deepen understanding of CGF.
The second part will focus on what Japanese companies should do now and in the future as part of the beyond SDGs.
In this era of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity), SDGs / SX (compatibility of sustainability between society and companies), changes in the relationship between organizations and people, and changes in the sense of well-being and values, it is clear that companies must consider what they should do in complex ways. Various speakers will discuss these issues in light of Japan Originality and Japan Uniqueness.

How Japanese Companies Should Address Human Rights Issues as Seen in Government Guidelines

In the EU, the draft Corporate Sustainability DD Directive was published in February 2022, and human rights DD is becoming mandatory under the leadership of the United States and Europe. It indicates that companies will be obliged to implement human rights and environmental DD in the "chain of business activities," including the activities of upstream and downstream "business associates.
Meanwhile, in Japan, the "Guidelines for Respecting Human Rights in Responsible Supply Chains" have been established by the Japanese government in September 2022.
In this panel, participants will deepen the discussion on "how Japanese companies can improve their value and international competitiveness" from the perspective of "human rights and business".
