JAXA has started the study of the vegetation Lidar on the ISS (International Space Station)-JEM (Japanese Experimental Module)-EF (Exposed Facility). The name of this lidar is “Multi- footprint Observation Lidar and Imager (MOLI)”. Since the ICESat/GLAS measured forest canopy height globally and contributed to the improvement of forest biomass estimation, the Lidar drew much attention as one of the key Earth Observation sensors and many vegetation Lidars in space have been proposed.

JAXA will have International Workshop on Vegetation Lidar and Application from Space on May 26, 2017 at Chiba University Sho-in Hall. Objectives of this workshop are to identify the potential of vegetation LIDAR in space, especially MOLI mission, to assess the fusion of other satellites and MOLI and to discuss expectations of vegetation LIDAR.
